Northampton, MA – On Thursday, April 18th, at around 9:40 a.m., authorities received a call about three workers who were trapped after an accident involving two portable trailers.
The trailers were meant to be used as a temporary workspace for employees while the Department of Transportation (DOT) renovated its building located on North King Street. However, something went terribly wrong when the trailers shifted and three workers who were contracted from Trico Welding based out of Connecticut, became entrapped.
"They were in the interior of the two buildings that were being put together," said Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan. "They were trapped between those two modular units." According to Sullivan, of the three workers who were trapped inside, one of them died. The District Attorney's Office identified the deceased worker as a 56-year-old man from Bristol, Connecticut.
Another worker needed to be extricated; he was subsequently transported to Baystate Medical Center to treat his non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, the third worker escaped the incident without injury.
According to Sullivan, it was just too early to tell why the trailers had come off their blocks. "We do not have the exact cause right now," said Sullivan. "We are going to look at the entire premises, both interior and exterior, and try to determine what happened to cause the shifting of these particular modular units."
Authorities are not only focused on finding the cause of this fatal accident, but they also want to know if there were any workplace or code violations involved. If so, such violations could lead to who was responsible for the accident.
Sullivan said that they will do a full workplace safety evaluation, along with OSHA as well as other responsible investigating agencies. "We will try to make sure to do that thorough investigation to determine the death and the injuries to the individuals." According to the District Attorney's Office, the 56-year-old victim who died in the accident left behind a wife and two children.
